#WomanMade: Kick-ass Katie Lewis

For International Women's Day 2019, we are championing self-made women with our campaign, #WomanMade.

As part of this, we'll celebrate and share the stories of four Haygarth Group women - not only do these women boss their day job, but they also ace their side hustle too.

First up, it's all about Katie Lewis.

“Haygarth have been really supportive of my journey to becoming a personal trainer. I feel very fortunate.”

At 5.45pm on Wednesdays, a strange sight occurs. Swinging open the white doors of the agency, a stream of gym-kitted creatives and account handlers exit our Wimbledon office and turn right, rather than a homebound left, to congregate in Haygarth’s garage. For 45 minutes, they move, jump, duck, sweat, pant and laugh through a HIIT session led by the fearless Katie, Head of Artwork, Creative Services Coordinator, and a kick-ass personal trainer.

So, how did Katie become the boss of artwork briefs and burpees?

Having had a lifelong passion for fitness, Katie was working admin-side at her local gym on Saturday mornings when, in early 2018, she was offered an opportunity to lead a fitness class. Not one to turn down a challenge, she took the offer a step further – enrolling in an intensive six-week course to become a fully-qualified personal trainer.

For many, the prospect of a month and a half of studying and training seems daunting. Add a weekday 9-to-5 into the mix and daunting quickly becomes unfathomable. But, for Katie, her motivation for pursuing a second passion could be summed up in two words, “Why not?”

“People always ask me ‘how do you do two jobs’? But they’re just so completely different. It doesn’t feel like two jobs, I love both, so neither is a chore.”

Katie’s story is a lesson in perseverance, dedication and seeking help when needed.
“If you’ve got a passion… find a way to do it. We’re only at work 40 hours a week, so that gives you enough time to do other things.

“It will be tough, but preserve with it. Just do what you can and don’t put any pressure on yourself. If you say, ‘I’m going to do it, but I’m going to do it in my own time’ then you will get there eventually.”

And her advice for fellow side-hustlers?

“Lean on other people and tell your workplace…. Haygarth have been really supportive of my journey to becoming a personal trainer. I feel very fortunate.”
